Managing Scope Creep as an Indie

I started my "simple" 2D platformer six months ago, and now it has a crafting system, three playable characters, and a branching narrative. I’m overwhelmed and haven't actually finished a single level yet. How do you stay disciplined and avoid scope creep? Every time I see a cool mechanic in another game, I want to add it to mine. Is it better to cut features now to finish the game, or should I keep building until I’m 100% satisfied with the depth? I’m worried I’ll never launch.

Re: Managing Scope Creep as an Indie

Scope creep is the "indie killer." You have to fall in love with finishing, not just starting. My advice? Cut your feature list in half, then cut it again. Focus on one "core hook" and make it perfect. When I start feeling overwhelmed by my own to-do lists, I step away and play on https://basswins.co.uk/ to decompress. It’s a good reminder that a focused, well-polished experience is always better than a cluttered, unfinished one. Define your "Minimum Viable Product" (MVP) and ship that. You can always add the extra characters or crafting systems in an update later!
