Worried about keeping crypto on an exchange – what's cold storage?

I've been keeping my Bitcoin on an exchange, but with all the hacks and collapses lately, I'm getting nervous. I hear people mention "cold storage" but I don't really understand what it is or how it works. Do I need special equipment? Is it complicated for a beginner?

Re: Worried about keeping crypto on an exchange – what's cold storage?

Cold storage simply means keeping your crypto offline, away from internet threats – like a USB device or hardware wallet. The key point is that your private keys never touch an online device, so hackers can't reach them. It sounds technical, but devices like Ledger or Trezor guide you through setup step by step. This blog post explains it really well: you can learn what a cold wallet is, how it differs from hot wallets, and whether it's worth the cost (usually 50–50–250) https://paybis.com/blog/glossary/what-is-cold-storage/ . For larger amounts, it's highly recommended. For small amounts you trade often, a hot wallet or even keeping on an exchange might be fine.
